321/365 Farmers Markets

Friends and Fitness Enthusiasts,

I'm sort of realizing that we talk a lot about food here. I don't think this is a bad thing, just kind of funny since I always address you as "friends and fitness enthusiasts." Really though, we've all got to eat! Moving on ...

Another reason to love Spring and Summer is Farmers Markets! If you use your Google skills, I am pretty positive that you will be able to find a Farmers Market near you. If you've never been, it feels like the right way to buy groceries. They have a lot of the same produce (obviously they'll have what is in season) and I don't know, it just feels amazing to buy food outside where it was grown and harvested. The food looks prettier too, more vibrant. There are also usually vendors who sell other homemade goods like soaps and preserves. By the way, I love homemade preserves or at least preserves that don't use artificial or ultra-sweet sweeteners; Bonne Maman is a favorite of mine in the grocery stores.

I like Farmers Markets because you can get to know the people who are feeding you and you can clearly see that nothing was done to it during shipping. If you are concerned about how the food was grown, the experts are right there. You are also supporting local people which is always a plus to me.

Sadly, I have yet to go to a Farmers Market here in New England but I am determined to before I move back to DC/NOVA. I'll let you know how it goes.

In health,

Lauren

  1. If waking up early on weekends sounds horrible or you can't get to your weekly market- a seasonal CSA may be a great alternative. LocalHarvest.org is a directory you can search to find local markets, farms and community supported agriculture (CSA) programs. As a CSA member you buy a share of the weekly or monthly farm crop and can pick it up at a near by drop off point, or some even deliver! I am trying it out for the first time with a smaller half-share and I love it. Saves me time produce shopping, pushes me to try new vegetables and learn new ways to cook them. Although, next year I will definitely be signing up for the full share- I just cannot get enough of the fresh fruits and veggies :)

  2. That is so awesome! I've seen that before but I didn't do it probably because I was in school and didn't have the money or wasn't going to be around for the harvest. I'm totally looking into that, thanks for the tip!

  3. Love, love, love farmer's markets. I shop for my fruits and veggies there as opposed to the grocery stores. Much more bang for your buck, plus the food tastes fresher and much better. Also the variety at a farmer's market is great. I also appreciate the new initiatives in the urban areas so that fresh foods are being brought to families who otherwise can not get to farmer's markets and who can not afford the high prices in the grocery stores. So absolutely support your farmer's markets.
